I’m copying a call of submissions from the Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, regarding a new project that they are launching called the Swim Drink Fish Music Club. I might add that this is a project looking for exclusive content.
The Waterkeeper Alliance Program is an international web of grassroots organizations, many of which have charitable status, who help clean up and watch over their nearby bodies of water. I work at the Fraser Riverkeeper in British Columbia, and so we have a lot of contact with our other Canadian waterkeepers.

_____
The Swim Drink Fish Music Club is a new project developed by Lake Ontario Waterkeeper and other Canadian Waterkeepers. Artists and activists are united in the battle for clean water. You can help.
The goal is simple: unite musicians with an interest in the environment with the communities Canadian Waterkeepers work tirelessly to defend.
What it is
The Swim Drink Fish Music Club is the next evolution of the “At the Barricades” music series. Lake Ontario Waterkeeper’s first compilation, At the Barricades Vol. 1, was produced by Chris Brown and included tracks from artists such as Gord Downie, Sarah Harmer, Broken Social Scene, Stars, Pete Seeger and Bruce Cockburn.
The Swim Drink Fish Music Club is a year-round online music and audio experience. Club members can access and download a series of exclusive and rare tracks donated by artists and added on a weekly basis. There’s also Waterkeeper-produced audio content, including news updates and the weekly radio show Living at the Barricades, produced by Lake Ontario Waterkeeper.
Artists who have agreed to donate exclusive or rare tracks to the Swim Drink Fish Music Club include returning favorites like Gord Downie and Sarah Harmer. We also expect to see some great new additions to the lineup in 2009.

How you can help
Helping Waterkeepers create a swimmable, drinkable, fishable Canada is as easy as donating a song to our project.
Ideally, we’re looking for material few people have heard before: unreleased tracks, remixes, or tracks produced just for the Swim Drink Fish Music Club. (Artists like Sarah Harmer and Gord Downie (with the Sadies) have recorded cover tracks with producer Chris Brown, and Waterkeeper helped to cover studio expenses and obtain legal clearances.) Rare and exclusive tracks like these make great feature items.
What you get
Every month we feature a new artist, with a large image and audio story on the Club’s main page. New content is added weekly, and a notice is sent to all Club members to let them know you’ve joined the fight for clean water. Your track page includes photo, streaming audio, an audio story about your song, download options, and links to similar content.
When your song is released, you’ll get a chance to promote your music to our club members, a chance to do some media publicity with our marketing team. Because the online distribution process is more organic than a traditional CD, we can coordinate the timing so it works best for you! We’ll also encourage our members to visit your website, buy tickets to your shows, or order full albums if they like your stuff.
Want more? Waterkeeper has a team of volunteers ready to appear at other events when you’re on tour and in our watersheds. We’ll even work your merch table if it helps.
Still there?
If writing or covering a song for charity sounds like fun AND you want to help Waterkeepers create a swimmable, drinkable, fishable Canada, please contact us.
A test website (beta site) will be available for sneak previous after March 6, 2009. It’s populated with tracks from At the Barricades: Vol. I and offers a sneak peak at what’s in store. The Swim Drink Fish Music Club officially launches in early spring 2009, but it’s never too late to join!
Here’s what you do.
Send an email to ryan@waterkeeper.ca and let us know what you’re thinking. You can also call any time: (416) 861-1237.
I hope we’ve piqued your interest. We hope to hear from you soon on how we can collaborate to help make this project a success.
Ryan LaFlamme,
Lake Ontario Waterkeeper
